Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust Strategic Plan

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust leads and inspires action to conserve and enhance the landscape from Seattle across the Cascade Mountains to Central Washington, ensuring a long-term balance between people and nature.

Shooting stars2Launching from our Success

In 1991, the Seattle region was on the verge of a significant economic boom, and unchecked sprawl threatened much of the region.  Twenty years later in the Mountains to Sound Greenway, vibrant urban, suburban and rural communities flourish alongside working forests and farms, spectacular natural beauty, abundant wildlife, clean rivers and lakes, world-class recreation and quiet places where one can simply get away from it all.  It's a remarkable conservation success built through a local cultural commitment to foster a balance between the built and natural environments.  By convening a broad range of public and private stakeholders in our vision and in our daily work, the Greenway Trust serves as a catalyst for action to ensure retention of a thriving natural world and a growing and globally competitive economy.

Turning to the Future

The role of the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust is to make sure that the Greenway remains a cherished place for generations to come.  We do this by collaborating with and learning from a diverse array of interested parties who share a strong common bond: an appreciation for the extraordinary value of the Greenway and a commitment to pass its care and stewardship from generation to generation.  The Greenway Trust provides the "table" for collaboration and serves as the glue that holds many viewpoints together.

In 2010, to plan for the next two decades, the Greenway Trust gathered hundreds of groups and individuals, representing a wealth of different viewpoints, who shared their desires for what we all should do to preserve the Greenway legacy for the future.  Much has changed in twenty years.  The effects of global climate change are more pronounced, reinforcing the need to conserve and enhance the natural systems that clean our air and water, grow our food and hold our communities.  Local, state and federal conservation budgets have eroded significantly, creating a need and an opportunity for an even more collaborative approach.  An economic crisis has challenged our local economy, and as local businesses strive to maintain regional, national and global competitiveness, they appreciate more than ever the quality of life in the Greenway that draws many talented people to the region.  These surroundings are the lifeblood of our culture, our institutions and our businesses.

The 1.5 million-acre Greenway, delineated by watershed boundaries, is a living, dynamic place requiring continuous attention and care, or its unique balance between built and natural environments could be lost.
